Most Common ATM Parts

When a person steps up to an automated teller machine, they probably do not think about all of the ATM parts that are combined to make the machine work. The owners of the ATM machines should be aware of the most common parts of the machine so they can keep their machines operating all of the time.

The first part that a customer deals with at an ATM machine is the user interface. The user interface consists of a few different ATM parts. There is the keypad, a screen and a card reader. Different machines will use parts that may function in different ways, but these parts all share common purposes no matter what they look like

  • Keypad – This is the part that allows the user to type in their pin number and to select the amount of money they want to withdraw. The keypad can be made up of numbers or it can have buttons that allow the user to choose different options.
  • Screen – The screen displays the actions that the machine is doing. There are many machines that now combine the screen and the keypad into the same part.
  • Card Reader – This allows the machine to read the information that is stored on the ATM card that is being used.

The second of the ATM parts that is needed is the communications device. This allows the ATM machine to transmit the information about the transaction to the proper place. It also sends the information back to the machine to complete the transaction. The connection can be wireless, it can be through a hardwired modem or it can be a direct connection.

For many people the next part is the most important. It is the vault. This is where the money is stored for the users of the machines to withdraw. Not all ATM machines have a vault. There are many machines that print out a ticket that can be handed to the operator of the machine who will give them the cash they have withdrawn.

There are a few ATM parts that are not on every machine. Slots that allow people to deposit money into the machine and security cameras are often added to the machines. The deposit slots are usually at machines operated by banks and security cameras are in place to provide security for both the machine and the people using the machine.

When a person owns an ATM machine, they should be aware of the parts. That way they will know what has to be replaced to make sure their machine is functioning and earning the money they want.
